The antagonist in Thailand’s national epic, The Ramakien, Tossakan was the Demon King of Langka, reincarnation of the giant “Nonthok”. An incredible token of Thailand culture, this collectible is an artistic portrayal of Tossakan, finished with an antiqued copper frame that is surely deserving of its place in one’s display.
 
The Ramakien
Ramakien is Thailand’s national epic, with its origins dating back to the 13th century. The story is an adaptation of an ancient Indian tale called ‘Ramayana’, with various modifications made through the story within the Thai version. It has since become the backbone and compass of Thai culture, and has been told in various forms since history – ranging from shadow puppet shows, dances, to modern literature, art and drama. The characters and stories from the epic are depicted in lavish paintings at the Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), Thailand’s most sacred Buddhist temple.
 
The Ramakien continues to be shared and taught in schools today, encompassing lessons of virtue, trust, honour, pride and forgiveness.
 
Tossakan 
Tossakan (also known as ‘Totsakan’ or ‘Tosakanth’) is the Demon King of Langka, the reincarnation of a giant named “Nonthok.” In his past life, he was a brave demon who served Phra Isuan by washing the feet of visiting angels. He was bullied throughout this time, often being slapped and mistreated, and even had his hair pulled until he became bald. After tolerating this for millions of years, he could not bear it any longer and requested for the special ability of killing anyone he pointed at. His wish was granted, and he used his ‘diamond finger’ against the angels that bullied him. Despite this reasonable cause, he was slain by Phra Narai for his actions.
 
Tossakan was then reincarnated as the king of the city of Langka with ten faces and twenty hands. He wreaked havoc in his reign, and was a tyrant in his methods. Despite so, he was invincible as he had stored his heart away in the shell of a mussel. Tossakan is often considered as the most ‘humanly’ character within the Ramakien, due to his worldly and relatable emotions and feelings that were portrayed within the epic, as opposed to other characters who were sometimes too ‘wholesome’ and unrealistic.
 
Demon King of Langka
This collectible features the Demon King in his full armour, and all his weapons in his hands surrounding him. Various gothic motifs and Thai patterns are delicately drawn in the background while his profile stands out in a powerful stance, and these patterns follow through to the obverse. This dramatic impression of Tossakan is presented with elaborate detail, complete with a one-of-a-kind copper frame that makes it the perfect display piece.
 
Finish
The very first of its kind, this collectible sits within a minted copper frame that serves as its Certificate of Authenticity. Weighing in at 2kg with dimensions of 12 x 19 cm, the frame was made from antiqued copper to produce an opulent backdrop, then artfully designed with intricate Thai motifs to match the origins of Tossakan’s character. A new minting technique called “Bi-Metal Max” was applied to give the collectible its remarkable weight and 8 cm diameter – double the size of the regular 2 oz collectible. This is made possible by combining 11.5 oz of copper as a base with a top layer of 2 oz of 999 pure silver, resulting in a super ultra-high relief topped with silver antiqued finishing.
