(SERIAL NUMBER #3/9) The combination of the legendary dragon and the number ‘9’ is an unbeatable duo, with the former carrying the magical ‘Sheng Chi ’ that attracts success and good luck while the latter signifies an everlasting time. A blessed artefact that amplifies this to great effect by portraying all 9 Sons of the Dragon King on a single supersized piece, this is a stunning collectible that makes for a benevolent gift or collector’s pride.
The Dragon
The dragon is a legendary mythical creature that is prominent in Chinese culture and Feng Shui, also known as Chinese geomancy. It represents power, strength, wisdom and good fortune, and is thought to be the embodiment of the Chinese emperor. It is believed that by having an article bearing the dragon on one’s body or in his home, it acts as a personal talisman to ward off evil and bad luck.
The 9 Sons
The Dragon King is believed to have had 9 sons, with each of them bearing different abilities but as powerful as one another. On its own, the number ‘9’ itself also carries significant meaning, as it represents longevity and eternity due to its homophone with the Chinese character for “everlasting”. Each of the 9 sons had different forms, but were mostly depicted as hybrids of dragons with other spiritual creatures such as turtles and tigers when they were not represented as dragons. Due to the symbolism of the number 9 combined with the significance of the mythical dragon, representations of the 9 Sons of the Dragon King have been applied onto places of cultural importance as a symbol of protection and blessing, such as the Nine-Dragon Wall that can be found at Forbidden City and Beihai Park in Beijing.
The Flaming Pearl
Here, the 9 dragons are presented with each of them in fluid motion, creating a sense of movement as they reach toward the fireball in the centre. This fireball is sometimes referred to as the “Flaming Pearl” or “Pearl of Wisdom” in Feng Shui. It is known to be a symbol of prosperity, wisdom and luck, and also carries significance in the religious faith of Taoism and Buddhism as a ‘sacred pearl’ that grants all wishes. The 9 dragons illustrated in close pursuit of the Flaming Pearl thus represents that success and prosperity are soon to be expected, an indication of good fortune and luck.
As the dragons move towards the Flaming Pearl, clouds form beneath them that represent the dragon’s breath, also called “Sheng Chi” or “Cosmic Breath”. This is the most desired energy in Feng Shui that attracts wealth, luck and fortune. The clever and intricate use of depth in executing the engraving brings this out to a superb 3D effect. Each feature on the dragons’ body and face is distinctively struck, and at the top of the coin lies an ingot and ancient Chinese coins while the dragons all look and move towards it, symbolising a clear and defined path to good fortune.
